An engaging afternoon of experiential STEAM workshops for parents and children aged 3 to 15

From flying drones and stepping into holographic worlds to breaking ancient ciphers, design thinking and racing cars, every day at Dunecrest is exciting and different. With our cross-curricular approach, learning is rooted in a real-world context, while the latest educational technology brings concepts to life like never before!

At Dunecrest American School, we recognize the importance of choosing the right school for your child. To support interested parents with this important decision, we warmly invite you to join us for our experiential taster day on Saturday, February 1 from 3 to 5.30 p.m. Experience the Dunecrest difference, through a series of engaging, age-appropriate STEAM workshops led by Dunecrest principals, teachers and activity providers.

Schedule of Events

Each child will be given an engaging and age appropriate schedule of two STEAM workshops for the afternoon. You will also have the opportunity to meet Dunecrest families and tour our facilities. Our supercharged STEAM workshops are detailed below. Please click the tab to explore the workshops further.

EARLY CHILDHOOD (3-6 Years)

EARLY CHILDHOOD

Age Groups: Pre-KG (3-4 years), KG1 (4-5 years) and KG2 (5-6 years)

ARRGH! ME MATEES! LET’S FIND SOME TREASURE

  • Leader: Ms. Crystal Hanna, Dunecrest Head of Early Childhood
  • Description: Shine up your cutlass and eyepatch and get ready to embark on a quest for treasure! Early Childhood teachers will take young children on an exciting journey through literacy, technology, building and arts & crafts all wrapped up in the thrill of imaginative play as a clever and fun-loving pirate. A typical Dunecrest afternoon, will leave your little pirates in awe of all the treasures that they accumulate.

* This 45 interactive workshop will be followed by a picnic where we enjoy the pirates’ spoils.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL I (6-8 Years)

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL I

Age Group: Grade 1 (6-7 years) and Grade 2 (7-8 years)

Workshop 1: STEAM IN A BAG

  • Leader: Ms. Lisa Gibson, Elementary School Principal
  • Description: STEAM Learning is about engaging students in a problem solving process which develops their critical thinking skills and allows them to demonstrate their creativity, Students are taught to follow a design thinking model which enables them to think through a set process and encourages multiple solutions to a problem. We would like to welcome guests to join us to participate in a typical Dunecrest lesson, “STEAM Mystery Bag Challenge.”

Workshop 2: WEDO LEGO CAR DESIGN & RACE

  • Leader:Ms. Saira Gulamani, Founder of Small Briques, After School Activity Provider
  • Description: Small Briques will bring the world of LEGO together with Robotics, and let your child’s imagination run ….. Children will have the opportunity to design, build their LEGO model cars, code and race them. A session of fun, learning and experiencing speed in LEGO cars. Enjoy building and fun while coding. Will the tires make a difference, will the surface make a difference, will your coding make a difference … come and find out!


ELEMENTARY SCHOOL II (8-10 Years)

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL II

Age Group: Grade 3 (8-9 years) and Grade 4 (9-10 years)

Workshop 1: MAMBO DRONES

  • Leader:Mr. Ricky Prince, Head of Computer Science
  • Description: Students will participate in a series of programming tasks using a Mambo Fly drone. They will learn how to code via Apple's own text based coding language – Swift using swift playgrounds. Newly minted pilots, will then race their Mambos though a series of obstacles for the title of Supreme Mambo!

Workshop 2: STEAM IN A BAG

  • Leader: Ms. Lisa Gibson, Elementary School Principal

MIDDLE SCHOOL (10-14 Years)

Age Group: Grade 5 (10-11 years), Grade 6 (11-12 years), Grade 7 (12-13 years), Grade 8 (13-14 years)

Workshop 1: EGYPTOLOGY - ART OF THE ANCIENT WORLD

  • Leader:Mr. Daniel Cruz, Secondary History Teacher & Head Swim Coach & Ms. Darien Jade Stankowski, MS/HS Art Teacher + IB Art Teacher
  • Description: Join us on a journey with our resident Egyptologist where history and art collide! The ancient Egyptians believed that writing was invented by the god Thoth and called their hieroglyphic script "mdju netjer" ("words of the gods"). The word hieroglyph comes from the Greek hieros (sacred) plus glypho (inscriptions) and was first used by Clement of Alexandria. Come learn how the Ancient Egyptians developed hieroglyphics, practice the ancient alphabet and try your hand in creating and deciphering the original coding language.

Workshop 2: BIOLOGY WAS NEVER LIKE THIS!

  • Leader: Ms. Cynthia Nutter, MS/HS Science Teacher + IB Biology Teacher
  • Description: Long gone are the days of science labs perfumed with formaldehyde. Dissections in this generation occur using augmented reality (AR)! Come experience the thrill of dissection and analysis using AR the Dunecrest way!

HIGH SCHOOL (14-16 Years)

Age Group: Grade 9 (14-15 years), Grade 10 (15-16 years)

  • Leader: Ms. Cynthia Nutter, MS/HS Science Teacher + IB Biology Teacher
  • Description: Long gone are the days of science labs perfumed with formaldehyde. Dissections in this generation occur using augmented reality (AR)! Come experience the thrill of dissection and analysis using AR the Dunecrest way!
